“Treba ja~ati svijest na prostorima Bosne i Hercegovine o kulturnoj raznolikosti uz uzajamno uva`avanje i toleriranje”, ka`e don Ivan Ravli}, `upnik @upe Presvetog trojstva u Sarajevu i autor zanimljive izlo`be predstavljene u sarajevskom Collegium artisticumu proteklog mjeseca.

reason of convergence, while unfortunately at some other times it leaned in the negative direction, driving nations apart. However, on behalf of coexistence, cooperation and understanding, which are all inevitable ingredients for the subsistence of all of us together in these areas, we prefer the religious values that bring us closer to each other. And such can be witnessed on every step we take in this country and in the traces of the century-long existence of four of the largest monotheistic religious communities in the crowded area of Bosnia and Herzegovina. “We ought to build up people’s conscience about cultural diversity by mutual appreciation and tolerance in the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina”, says Don Ivan Ravli}, parson of the Holy Trinity Parish in Sarajevo and author of the fascinating exhibition presented in Collegium Artisticum last month in Sarajevo. Don Ivan Ravli} says that the idea of an exhibition of sacral and religious exhibits of the religions on the territory of BiH – Islamic, Roman – Catholic, Orthodox and Jewish religious communities – which exist in BiH, has been growing in him for a long time. “This cultural event is a step forward for our region towards improving inter-religious communication, ecumenism, and dialogue”, says Ravli}, whose idea was unofficially supported by Cardinal Vinko Pulji}, Reisu-l-ulema of the Islamic community in BiH Mustafa ef. Ceri}, Archbishop Nikolaj, and the president of the Jewish community Jakob Finci. BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER The objective of the exhibition is, as of all true believers, to connect and unify BiH nations in their diversity and thereby get people closer to each other in their coexistence. Visitors had the opportunity to see numerous photos of religious objects and documents about religious life in BiH since old times until now, whose originals could not be brought to Collegium Artisticum due to various reasons. Photos of valuable details from the church of the Holy Trinity in Novo Sarajevo were exposed. Ravli} decided to open the exhibition with a photograph of the main altar of the church representing a cross road made of chlorine ceramics from 1907. The side altar is a piece by one of the most known architects from these areas, Josip Vanca{, called the Heart of Mary made of oak and covered with gold somewhere in Tirol.

SYNAGOGUE IN BIJELJINA, COSTUME OF Oni koji to nisu znali ranije, na Ravli}evoj izlo`bi mogli su saznati A BOSNIAN DERVISH, THE OLDEST MOSQUES In the part dedicated to Judaism, photos of breviaries attracted looks as well as a praying mantle from the synagogue of AshkeKatarina Kosa~a nazi Jews. Those who did not know this earlier could at Ravli}’s exhibition find out that there is a Jewish synagogue in Bijeljina. Moreover, the beauty of making of a cemetery chapel in the Old

MADONNA WITH CHRIST, PORTRAIT OF THE BOSNIAN QUEEN, ENGRAVINGS AND CENSERS Then follow two valuable paintings from the 17th century. Madonna with Christ is a gift from an unknown master from Venice and it has been borrowed from a monastery in Kre{evo. The painting Sinless pregnancy by Stjepan Dragojlovi} from 1621 arrived from the monastery Kraljeva Sutjeska. Visitors of the exhibition who have never been to the monastery in Kraljeva Sutjeska could see the portrait of Bosnian Queen Catharina Kosa~a as well as valuable exhibits from monasteries in Mostar, Fojnica, Gu~a Gora, Petri~evac, Livno, Rama-[}it, and Tolisa. The National Museum in Sarajevo borrowed some of the exhibits to the author, and among them there are engravings and censers from the 17th and 18th century, as well as bells from Bobovac. The beautiful painting Dazzled Saint Franjo arrived from the monastery in [iroki Brijeg, a piece by an Italian master from the 17th century. It is a custom for richer people to help their parish from time to time. Johan and Viktorija Rusnak did just that in 1907 by giving a sacramental cross to the Church of the Holy Trinity in Novo Sarajevo which is in use even today. Lilies as a Bosnian motif and the symbol of the long Bosnian life are printed on a priest’s cloak made of red brocade. A part dedicated to the Orthodox in BiH offered a variety of exhibits from all parts of the country. Visitors could enjoy everything from churches in Trebinje and Dobrun most probably built in the 12th century, and the house of birth of Saint Vasilije Ostro{ki in the village Mrkonji}i, over to the Orthodox Church in Banja Luka from 1930. The author also tried to present an evangel from the 14th century, which was one of the curiosities of the exhibition.

Dio izlo`be posve}en islamu otvorili su eksponati no{nji me|u kojima se isticala no{nja bosanskog dervi{a iz Hajdarije, porodi~nog muzeja {ejha Muse hafiza ]azima Had`imejli}a iz Ka}una.

Sephard cemetery in Sarajevo was presented as well. The part of the exhibition about Islam was opened by an exhibit of costumes among which the costume of a Bosnian dervish from Hajdarija taken from the family museum of Musa hafiz ]azim Had`imejli} from Ka}un was particularly interesting. Besides numerous paintings of headstones from the Ottoman period visitors could also see calligraphic writings and famous ’levhas’. One of them originates from the mosque Sulejmanija in Travnik. A calligraphic writing from the Land museum in Travnik from 1815 was also extraordinary. It is written on it in Arabic: Ve lillahi teala (Everything belongs to Allah). The way people have used the Divi~ mosque for centuries was presented on an old postcard today owned by the Museum of History of BiH. Similar to that one is another postcard with the motif of El~i Ibrahim – pasha’s medresa (Islamic school) in Travnik renewed in 1893. The photo of [i{man Ibrahim-pasha’s mosque in Po~itelj, one of the oldest religious objects was also presented at the exhibition. And of similar value was the photo of a Qur’an from 1458 held in the monastery of the Holy Trinity on Petri~evac. ’RAHLE’ MADE OF NACRE, WOOD AND TURTLE SHELL ’Rahle’ (foldable book stands which Muslims use for reading) could also be seen, usually with a copy of the Qur’an on them. Those presented at the exhibition by Don Ivan Ravli} are made of nacre, wood and turtle shell and have been borrowed from the museum of Musa hafiz ]azim Had`imejli}. The exhibition that was visited by many people from Sarajevo during the last month in Collegium Artisticum is the first of its kind in our areas. Thus, it carries great importance for the history and culture of its nations, considers the author. One should really wish many more exhibitions of this kind both to Don Ivan Ravli} and the nations of BiH. Because, as Don Ivan put it - events like this one will connect people in their diversity.

Kapacitet je 1.000 putnika na sat i umjesto dosada{njih 12,5 minuta do Trebevi}a }e se novom `i~arom voziti 6,5 minuta. Projektantska procjena ovog investicijskog projekta je 16 miliona KM. The cable car will use the existing route, it will have 15 posts, and the cabins will be made out of glass and aluminum, with eight seats. The capacity is 1.000 passengers per hour and instead of the usual 12,5 minutes, the new cable car will get to Trebevi} in six and a half minutes. The project investment estimate is 16 million KM.

It will be equipped with a staircase and two elevators that will be used to reach the platform from which the cable car starts its journey. The last station will also have a coffee bar, a shop and a garage facility for cleaning the cabins. There will also be a few binoculars available for the tourists to observe the panorama of the city. One of the priorities of the Action plan of the City of Sarajevo 2006-2008 is precisely the reconstruction of the Trebevi} cable car. “We practically initiated this project a few years back. By setting aside resources from the city budget for demining Trebevi}, which amounted to 700.000 KM, and with the financial help and cooperation of the Old Town Municipality, we have created the conditions for the reconstruction of the cable car”, said Semiha Borovac the mayor of Sarajevo and also reminded that according to the estimations by BHMAC, the area of Trebevi} should be completely free of mines by the end of this year. Somewhere at the end of 2007, the City of Sarajevo, according to the agreement with JKP Gras, started a tender procedure for BIHCITYREVIEW

the design of a project idea for the Trebevi} cable car, with an approved budget of 65.000 KM. After finishing the procedure, the project idea by “Geodet” was selected. The budget for 2008 approved by the City of Sarajevo for the continuation of the project activities amounts to 70.000 KM. Mayor Borovac accentuates that the following period should be used for the design of the master plan document for Trebevi}, which would in turn include the cable car reconstruction. Activities for the preparation phases and tasks for the master plan have been started in cooperation with the Old Town Municipality. Having these two documents in place (the project idea and master plan), completes the conditions for submitting the applications for the request for donations from national and international institutions and foundations. One of the models for the realization of this project could be concession, a decision about to be made by the Sarajevo Canton, says Borovac. “The goal of this project is returning the functionality to one of the symbols of Sarajevo and the enrichment of the tourist offer. A project of this significance should be a priority in the budgets on national and municipal levels because it is a highly important project for Sarajevo as well as for BiH”, emphasized mayor of Sarajevo.

Nalazi ispod vode, gradina iznad i groblje, sve to govori da je rije~ o vrlo interesantnoj BIHCITYREVIEW and one prehistoric, and concluded that an old stronghold probably existed on this site, in front of which there was some kind of harbor used for communicating with other parts of the Roman Empire. Archeologists say that the antique layer dates from the second century BC, and they have found fragments and amphora corks in it. The second, prehistoric layer revealed ceramics of smoother making and two fragments of ornate ceramics considered to date to the Iron Age. Last November an exceptionally preserved axe was found in that layer, and this time divers found a buckle from the Iron Age on the bottom of the lake. Based on the research and material evidence experts conclude that there was no water here a long time ago, at least not of today’s form.

Up to now we didn’t know about the construction on pillars, first set in the ground and then braided to form a plot. That kind of construction either regulated the flow of waters or was in the function of the harbor that must have existed here – says Snje`ana Vasilj. Experts also believe that there was a fort on the hill above Desilo. They base this conclusion on the revealed graveyard near the water, and on some findings on the hill itself. In antique times life here was much more vivid than we had imagined it to be. The findings below water, the stronghold and the graveyard speak about a very interesting micro-region that can be systematically explored from the prehistoric period till medieval times– says Vasilj. Experts plan to conduct further research on the hill on the Desilo location where they suppose there was a fort once. A key from the Roman period has been retrieved on the hill. A year ago Vasilj’s team revealed two antique ships in Desilo and during the exploration of the water they discovered 150 amphora corks with imprints of workshops, numerous amphora fragments most likely used for transporting wine, some 200 amphora lids, a remarkably saved metal axe thought to be older than the ships, remains of domestic Illyrian ceramics, and a Roman iron spear - all previously featured in BiH CITY REVIEW. The ships in Hutovo blato are the first ever found Illyrian ships. They are 2.200 years old and assumed to either have been anchored or wrecked here. The most recent research that showed the existence of a harbor city serves as a good explanation to why there are ships here in the first place

At the Tourist community of the Hercegova~ko-neretvanska County they particularly emphasize that the realization of this project will top off the long term venture of setting up advertising signs and urban tourist signalization, making Mostar the only city in BiH to have these elements. USAID supported the realization of this project by setting aside 27.000 for the pedestrian signalization. The directions for pedestrians are made in English and the BiH national languages, and are shaped to clearly show the way to the monuments one wants to see, just like in renowned world tourist destinations like Prague or Dubrovnik. The new signalization is in brown color and has been set up on around 20 spots in the center of town, and it will soon be set up in Neum, ^itluk, ^apljina – customized to the characteristics of these towns.

Arapski i hebrejski kaligrafi imaju vi{estoljetnu tradiciju. U BiH tradiciju nastavljaju kaligrafi u mnogim gradovima, a u Tuzli, pored ostalih, to su prof. Edina Halilovi} i prof.

Today in the Japanese and Chinese writing culture calligraphy is very important and inspiring. More important than the legibility, it was important to accomplish perfect esthetic balance and express feelings, so much that it is said that calligraphists used to practice for months to perfect in certain moves. Many calligraphists point out the meditative character of their job. Even though calligraphy has lost its significance in Europe, it lives on as a form of art and hobby. Arabic and Hebraic calligraphists have a century-old tradition. The tradition of calligraphy in BiH is carried on by calligraphists in many cities. In Tuzla, among others, these are Prof. Edina Halilovi} and Prof. Nermina Kamberovi} Barakovi} who presented their works in Konjic in the middle of March as part of the cultural event «Days of Sejfulah ef. Proho» (1859 – 1932). - While other artists express themselves on paper, canvas, copper, wood, and stone, my teacher Prof. Edina Halilovi} and I dared to paint on glass to perpetuate God’s word. I find inspiration for my arabesques and details in my grandmother’s books, rooms, gardens, carpets, sofas. We are obligated to preserve Bosnian values in our hearts, paintings, and books, says member of the Association of Artists of Tuzlanski Canton, Prof. Nermina Kamberovi} Barakovi} for BiH CITY REVIEW. The poet and woodcarver from Konjic Aziz Nuhi} exposed his levha (Islamic paintings) and woodwork. Except for its long tradition in woodwork Konjic also has its known calligraphists whose pieces are kept in Ghazi Husrev-bey’s library. Known calligraphists from Konjic were Dervi{ Ga~o son of Mustafa, Ahmed son of Salih from Neretva (Konjic), Mula-Husejn son of Muhamed from Seonica, Sejfulah Proho, and Mustafa son of Abdulah al Bosnevi al Belgrad~iki (from Konjic) who, as a student in Istanbul in 1758, rewrote a piece from the Arabic Grammar «Izhar al – asrar».

Different and unique for a lively vacation
special for lowlands and uplands, @ivinice is different andand winters, itsdense forests and clear vegetation in summers brooks, abundance of mushrooms, forest berries and healthy herbs, caves, pits and abysms, its people and nature… Here the rural absolutely rules over the urban; it is an eldorado for various kinds of active vacation in the nature. The whole area is undergoing a plan for defining its modern tourist identity that draws inspiration from both the many traces of tradition and the modern trends on the tourism market. And so – if you want to change climates, rest on your own or in company, replace the city rush and asphalt with forest tracks and the smell of trees, and in so doing, the lack of a developed guide service will not trouble you – then you should look for us and experience this area in your own unique way. In @ivinice people will not only welcome guests with smiles and a glass of brandy but also offer them meals of our grandpas and grandmas: from “zarica” (original dry cheese), fresh cow cheese and homemade dried meat over to hot soup and a main course. And as a final point are the original desserts from @ivinice – apple pie and ’kadaif’. That is only a part of the domestic atmosphere of a countryside house from @ivinice, which you can feel in our region today… The surrounding villages are excellent for countryside tourism. They are surrounded with forests that provide a great escape from the city hustle and bustle. The infrastructure is typical for the continental part of BiH, and the villages are located near the road and are easily accessible by car or bus. EXPERIENCE THE NATURE IN ITS FULL @ivinice enables You to choose among just about all kinds of landscapes. Take relaxing walks through the lowlands, hike on the slopes of Konjuh, gulp down some of our plum brandy or simply enjoy fishing on the three rivers that flow through the area of @ivinice.

It is considered one of the most monumental mosques in the area of northeastern Bosnia. It kept its original appearance until 1890 when the authorities decided to build other facilities around the mosque, and filled and flattened the terrain around it. As the entrance to the mosque ended up lower than before, the interior of the mosque was filled as well; 145 cm were added to the existing walls and a new roof was made. This is when the mosque got its look as we know it, with minor additional changes in 1910, 1967 and 1968. This mosque has been a shelter for Muslims in Tuzla for four and a half centuries. It has been the place where generations and generations of young people have been taught how to be good Muslims. It has served as an oasis for communicating to God, a place where Muslim souls could experience peace, contemplation, and closeness to Allah. And once again, in cooperation with the Government of the Federation, Canton Tuzla, Municipality Tuzla and the Islamic community, the citizens would like to be included in - as people in the Islamic community of Tuzla like to call it - the book of greats who have saved the bequest with deeds and funds. A specific of Ghazi Turali-bey’s bequest is certainly Ghazi Turali-bey’s mosque from the 16th century that is called „the golden age of Islamic culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina“. This mosque is both the crown and cradle of Ghazi Turali-bey’s future compound. The need for removing the redundant land to reach the original level of the ground, and shaping the harem (a marked part of the mosque’s yard that is in most cases partially a cemetery), which was lowered by 145 cm with respect to the surrounding roads, made the authors decide to also shape the roof differently and design an entrance porch with sofas (the elevated space in front of the mosque, right next to the mosque’s wall used for prayVAKUFI I D@AMIJE OVJEKOVJE^ILI TURALI-BEGOVO IME ing when there is no room inside the mosque), and designing the U proteklim vremenima d`amija je obnavljana vi{e puta. ili Turali-begova d`amija sa grebljem i turbetom u Tuzli progla{ava nacionalnim spomenikom Bosne i Hercegovine.

They are Bosnian meat}evape, i to u }evabd`inici “Kod Muje”, kao da Banju Luku nije ni vidio. I njeni sinovi Adis i Amir nastavljaju put svojih predaka. U~e tajne obiteljskog zanata i balls) served in flat bread. Those who come to Banja Luka and do not try chevapi- especially at the restaurant “Kod Muje” (At Mujo’s) – it is as if they have never been to Banja Luka at all. Having chevapi is a tradition for visitors and tourists to the city on Vrbas. Banja Luka’s chevapi are made of several kinds of finest meat mixed with spices, including the inevitable garlic. The precise ratio of mixing the spices is known only to a small number of cooks and the secret is transmitted from older generations to the younger ones in the family. Chevapi are shaped by hand or using a machine for meat grinding with special add-ons. That is how they have been prepared from generation to generation. One should eat real chevapi using a toothpick and, of course, by no means should they be had without homegrown onion. Unlike Sarajevo’s chevapi, Banja Luka’s chevapi are grouped together and are grilled in “tablets” consisting of four lined pieces of chevapi. The portions are served as small, middle and large. The history of Mujo’s Banja Luka’s chevapi actually dates from 1923 when Banja Luka, having less than 20.000 residents, was the transit spot for merchants traveling from central Bosnia towards the west. In that year, Red`ep \uzel opened an eating place that became widely popular a few years later. He endows that business to his older son Red`ep, and in 1966, his brother Mujo took over the business. In a previous issue of BiH CITY REVIEW our colleague Podgorelec wrote about Mujo’s kindness and nobleness. After the earthquake (1969) Banja Luka developed in a fast pace and that restaurant became one of its symbols. After Mujo’s getting hold of the business, the restaurant went through a revival. That is when it got the name “Kod Muje” (“At Mujo’s”). Mujo introduced an array of changes in the way of serving and new recipes of grilled meals, making the restaurant famous for its Banja Luka’s chevapi in the area of ex-Yugoslavia and all around the world. www.bihcityreview.com 25 / 2008

HE KNEW BANJA LUKA’S SOUL It seems that Mujo knew how to mix two-three kinds of meat according to some mysterious ratio, added the spices, carbon plus natural kindness, and of course - his experience. Some of that is for sure, or just mix all of that together - and there you have it. His nationals respected him, not because of the chevapi but because he knew their soul… It never happened that Mujo failed to treat his children’s school friends with chevapi, nor that he had an argument with someone. Journalist from “Glas” once asked for his recipe and if there was some secret hidden somewhere. Mujo said: “Come on children - go home, wash the dishes, cook something, sweep the room and you will learn everything!” Mujo the cook - knew that work, work and only work could rescue us! He liked the football team Borac. At one point he paid with his own money to keep the goalkeeper Jantoljak in the team! He used to give meat to neighbors - for free, of course. Hundred kilos of meat, maybe even more. A true first aid kit… Residents from Banja Luka know that this deed followed the catastrophic earthquake! Taken from the book «Sorry, Banja Luka!»

KAMENI I SPOMENIK DRVENI THE STONE AND WOODEN MONUMENT
>>>Pi{e/Written by: Slavko Podgorelec

arious military passed Banja V(across and alongformationsold narratorthroughclimbed upLuka it)… As an from Banja Luka, the writer Irfan Horozovi}, so beautifully put it–– some the road to God, while some descended the stairs to their grave… And, as another (again local!) man from Banja Luka, the famous and most knowledgeable person about theater, the establisher and actor Adem ]ejvan, who left this world in the summer of 1989 (for a better engagement at the heavenly theater), used to say - this Town was Europe when many of today’s ’European cities’ were not even aware of that… However, in this issue we will not go on to talk about the cafés Banja Luka had before Paris and Vienna; nor will we speak about the street illumination, which (according to inscriptions by “Sarajevo’s flower chest”, editor and publisher A.[. Kurt}ehaji}) Banja Luka had before… oh, I will not even go into that... Banja Luka features two unusual attributes: one is made of stone and (as the writer of the story knows), it still exists on the Banjalu~ko field. The other one, placed in the center of town at the very beginning of World War I (a wooden soldier, better said an iron figure) unpleasantly went down before the fall of Austro-Hungary, which – imagine that irony! – occupied, and a bit later on, took over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Berlin Congress (both de facto and de iure), that is – both practically and legally – gave over Bosnia and Herzegovina to the mercy of Austro-Hungary… Of course – with the formal approval of the Ottoman Empire that was practically unable to establish anything in BiH. The formal entry of the Austrian troupes and their surrounding of Banja Luka’s fortress (in July 1878) was quite elegant, but the central battle took place on the Banjalu~ko field on August 14 that same year…Banja Luka then experienced a three-day long terror from the part of the occupants (fires, robbery and much more), but the Austrians erected a monument on the field– a pyramid that was practically the end of the promenade, or better to say of the alley planted alongside and across the town on the Vrbas many years later by baron Jelzon (the brigade general). This Austrian mobilized the army to excavate seeds of trees and bring them down from the mountain Kozara. Engineer Blaha (a Czech, of course!) was chosen to do this task. The monument erected by the Austrian authorities (what a demagoguery!) was only there to cause trouble to the people because of the guard beside it all day long (with a Turkish fez on the head, wearing the Empire’s and Kingdom’s uniform). What is more, ladies of…let’s say – a specific (delicate) profession used to gather around that monument.

BIHCITYREVIEW

The academic and musicologist Vlado Milo{evi} told this to the author of this text and so did an honored gynecologist from Banja Luka, Josip Jovi} the ’Driver’… That is to say, Tone Gaji} (who held dance courses in Banja Luka in the 20s and 30s of last century), used to say to his students who had not paid the fee: “Is Tone Gaji} a hooker by the monument? Is Tone Gaji} working for bricks?!” We will go back to the monument in one of the following issues: the highlight of the Austrian occupation was represented by the so called “Verman im ajzen” (wooden iron soldier). That wooden sculpture representing a German soldier (probably from the time of Carl the Great?!) was installed by the occupational (Austro-Hungarian authorities) in the center of Banja Luka and it only served as a target for steel nail throws (10 monetary units per throw). Income gathered that way was to be given to refugees and poor people (whose caretakers had probably been killed on the battlefield). Banja Luka remains the same it has always been: when the news that Franc Josef (both Emperor and King, of course!) had left this world in Schönbrunn, spread through town (just before the end of the war), and when the news that his successor abolishes all of the (alleged) participants of the famous Sarajevo assassination attempt (on crown prince Franc Ferdinand) - that was the end of the wooden Knight located in the center of Banja Luka! Before the formal end of World War I, chestnut bakers from Banja Luka tore the wooden Knight apart dividing it into “equal parts”, and burned it down… And then, with true pleasure, they collected fine, straight and case hardened nails from chestnut fireplaces, which would serve their purpose for many years to come.

The plans and programs for maintaining the common parts of the buildings were drawn up together with the representatives of the part owners of the buildings, so to better fit their needs. This is a major progress considering the fact that the Law on utilization, management and maintenance of common parts of buildings has not been in practice for five years. The positive trend continues this year with a series of programs supported by the mayor of the Biha} Municipality Hamdija Lipova~a and the Municipal Council, resulting in assured budget funds for this purpose. The director of „Stanouprava“ Adnan Sabljakovi} says facades of living facilities in the center of the city should be renewed by the end of May, when it has been planned for the city to get its central square whose construction is ongoing, plus the paving of downtown, which has been a topic in earlier issues of this magazine, should be done this year. DEMANDING WORK ON THE [ABULI]A HOUSE FACADE The facade with decorative relief ornaments on the [abuli}a house has been reconstructed. This was a very arduous task because the relief parts of the facade had to be made in Zagreb. Elevators in three story buildings have been finished, telephone entry systems have been installed, and the front entrances have been renovated. Now they are on the job of placing fire extinguishers and a hydrant net in the buildings. Training of the building occupants in cooperation with the Fire Brigade is also ongoing.

NADOGRADNJA NA [EST ZGRADA I IZGRADNJA PRVE POSLIJERATNE ZGRADE Ukoliko Op}insko vije}e Biha} usvoji predlo`eni program nadzi|ivanja i izgradnje potkrovnih stanova, JU „Stanouprava“ bi izvr{ila sve pripremne radnje i izradu projekata, s ciljem izgradnje novih stanova.

I novi stanovi

As emphasized by Sabljakovi}, realization of the five-year plan on refurbishment of 50 of the buildings that represent or are about to represent a danger for the citizens has been initiated this year. Refurbishment of 12 buildings has been planned for the following year, which comprises renovation of roofs and edges, drain pipes, and the facades. Works on two heavily damaged buildings on the entrance to the city are already completed. „Stanouprava“ will finance these projects through a revolving crediting system from the budget funds. The funds will be paid back by the people living in the buildings through payment for the maintenance of the common parts of the buildings, and will be used to create an investment fund for similar projects. EXTENSION TO SIX BUILDINGS AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE FIRST POST-WAR BUILDING If the Municipal Council Biha} accepts the suggested plan on extension and building of pent house apartments, „Stanouprava“ would conduct the preparatory activities and carry out the project aiming to build new apartments. According to the Law on building annexes, „Stanouprava“ has already corroborated that the Lamela, SPO I and SPO II buildings in the Ozimice I neighborhood, as well as two sky scrappers in Harmani and one next to the „Kombiteks“ factory fit the criteria. These are buildings that have a flat terrace instead of a roof and are suitable for being built up on, and besides benefiting from these new apartments, these buildings would also be completely renovated– from installations to the facade. Moreover, „Stanouprava“ is carrying out the preliminary activities for the construction of the first post-war building in Biha}. The construction should start next year, and a million KM has already been assured for that purpose.

The entire quantity of chairs that was brought to the fair was sold out, and new orders were placed.

Presenting BiH as a partner country of the “Gast” fair resulted, among other things, in the initiation of the signing of the agreement on tourism cooperation between BiH and Croatia. “BiH has enough legroom to extend the tourism cooperation”, Branko Grgi} - the Croatian State Secretary for Tourism pointed out during his meeting with Vilim Primorac - the Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH. Sajam GAST je najzna~ajniji privredni doga|aj u Hrvatskoj, {to dokazuje broj od 1.269 izlaga~a, 21 zemlja koja je sudjelovala na sajmu, znatan broj industrijskih inovacija – pokreta~a privrede, kao i bogat privredni konferencijski program. evaluation, this tourism cooperation could result, other than summer vacations in Croatia and wintertime in BiH, in an exchange of labor force considering the amount of BiH workers that arrive to the Adriatic coast during the summer. The future agreement should bring special attention to the development of organized and thematic tourism, business meetings, as well as cultural and sports events. The fair was attended by Ned`ad Brankovi} - Prime Minister of the Federation of BiH, Vilim Primorac - Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH, Aleksandar Dragi}evi} - BiH Ambassador to Croatia, as well as many delegations and renowned economists. The compliments for BiH as a partner country of this year’s “Gast” fair were not just for the exhibitory part, but also for the evening cultural programmes that BiH organized over the duration fair. The rich cultural programme comprised “An evening of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Dioklecian’s basements” where the Imamovi} Trio performed; the movies „Nebo iznad krajolika“ («Sky Above the Landscape»), and „@ivi i mrtvi“ («The Living and the Dead») were shown, and the play „Bljesak zlatnog zuba“ («The Glint of the Golden Tooth») was performed. The GAST fair is the most significant economy event taking place in Croatia. The 1.269 exhibitors and 21 countries that were involved in the fair, along with a significant number of industrial innovations, and a rich conference programme on economy –testify about its growing importance. Bosnia and Herzegovina was for the first time a partner country of the “Gast 2008” fair in Split from March 5-9.

It contains the vitamins A, D, E, K, B1, B2, and C, as well as mineral substances, lactic acids, and carotene. Because of its rich content, high biologic value, it is also highly digestive and therefore irreplaceable in a regular everyday diet but also in a weight-loss program. Besides the Livno cheese, trapist, cincar and sheep cheese, the Livno Dairy also produces semi-soft cheese like edamer and gouda, soft creamy cheese, Livno feta and top quality butter. NATURAL PASTURES AND HEALTHY MILK The management is proud to say that they are one of the few dairies in BiH that has never imported. And the number one reason that makes the cheese be of supreme quality is in particular the domestically produced milk. Naturally, a great contribution to it is also the ecological cleanness of the area of Livno, the closeness to the sea and the diversity of grass areas. The area of Livno makes up 14,9 % of the total pastures in BiH and 24,1 % of the best pastures, ideal for raising livestock. Cattle and sheep feed themselves most of the year with grass from these natural pastures making the milk intended for cheese - healthy and of top quality. That is where the specific taste of the Livno cheese that is conquering the global market without any difficulty comes from. As the largest producer of cheese in BiH, the Livno Dairy annually buys eight million liters of milk from 1.300 cooperatives in the area of Livno and neighboring localities, and it has more than 50 employees. The dairy, as the most modern cheese producer on the BiH market, will obtain the following certificates in compliance with international standards: ISO 9001:2000 certificate for quality, the ISO 14001 for environmental management and the HACCP for the health validity of its products. www.bihcityreview.com 25 / 2008

Tome svakako doprinosi ekolo{ka nezaga|enost livanjskog prostora, blizina mora i raznovrsnost trava. And just so I don’t get caught up in writing another hackneyed text like those found in March 8 greeting cards, I will just state some of the “great messages and warnings” sent by powerful men from their offices thinking it was enough to use a couple of common phrases and globally known conclusions to make things right with us. Those words don’t mean anything to the women that use their own heads and really feel male chauvinism; they don’t even bother to listen. Namely, the financially powerful world organizations warned about the need for “improving the health of pregnant women and new mothers, putting forward that mortality rates of mothers are bigger in developing countries than those in developed countries”. Apart from that witty statement they also added that “there is less improvement in countries with low income, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa”. Furthermore they said that “in West and Central Africa, the average risk for death of women during delivery is 1:17 compared to 1: 8.000 in developed countries. The money, however, is in the developed ones”. They went on to point out the various issues women around the world face, such as rape, violence, and premature marriage. And so much for the sex which rapists, violators in the family and at work and those that conclude marriages with minor women in the first place, belong to. Then again, the European Commission nominates only men for future leading positions. WOOL SOCKS
of the sea. After three days of swimming butterfly, on the side, and backstroke, the Bosnian reaches the edge of a desert island with the tip of his fingers. As he reaches dry land, he hears a familiar voice saying: “For God’s sake, where have you been? I came here two days ago! Have you been cheating on me?”, his wife asked. And of course, with marks on her hip from the coffee mill she somehow managed to save from the wrecked ferry. And again, theory says that only such a wife, with or without mill traces on her hip, makes wool socks for the soldiers of the BiH Army in the middle of winter, so they wouldn’t catch a cold on Treskavica. Anyway, as Jusuf was conquering the \okin tower during the war in ’94, a number of wool socks came to our unit straight from Germany. It is important to mention here that Jusuf’s wife Belkisa had escaped to Germany together with her two small children. Knowing that Juka loved Belkisa more than anything, we wrote on a piece of paper: “I cried a river thinking about my dear Jusuf, a soldier of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian army, while knitting these socks. I’m asking faith to find a way to get these socks to my only man, friend and fighter Jusuf.” Then we deliberately attached this crumpled piece of paper to the socks using a pin and made them accidentally appear before Jusuf. We watched Jusuf read the note, and a tear rolling down his cheek. We acted as we had no idea what it was about, so we asked him why he was crying. “That crazy Belkisa of mine made socks even in Germany asking faith to bring them to my feet. And here they are - on my feet“, Juka told us, crying while putting on Belkisa’s socks. Of course, we told him otherwise. We said that we were sure that Belkisa was with a German guy to keep her children alive, and that neither Juka nor wool socks for the BiH army weren’t on her mind. No use! Juka kept crying, putting the socks on and taking them off, smelling them. He said that Belkisa was a faithful

Gledali smo Jusufa kako ~ita ono cedulj~e. “Jesam! Na jedne sam ~ak i cedulj~e oka~ila. When it comes to faith, let’s say that Juka survived the war. And that he asked Belkisa if she had been making wool socks while staying in Germany. “Yes! I even attached a note to a pair of them. The note said that I wished the socks I made would reach you”, Belkisa told him. Juka hugged her. And whispered in her ear: “There is a God Belkisa! There really is!”

“CINDERELLA” - FIRST BALLET PERFORMANCE IN BIH his year’s first performance of Sarajevo’s National Theater ballet was “Cinderella” performed on March 20-21 to the music of Johann Strauss II, and in the choreography, direction and musical dramaturgy of Vasilije Medvedev. The libretto for this play was written especially for this occasion by Yana Temiz from Turkey. This ballet is a beautiful light and lively family play, full of beautiful waltzes and polkas. The plot was transferred to the 60s of the last century, and it was obvious that the director tried hard to faithfully present the behavior of that time about which movies have been made, books have been written, and plays have been set. The debut of the ballet “Cinderella” was back in 1901 at the Royal Opera of Berlin in the choreography of Emil Graeb, and on the stage of the Vienna Imperial Opera in the choreography of Jozef Massreiter.

Theaters from Prijedor and Vara`din presented themselves for the first time in Ora{je – said the organizer of the theater party for the youngest, Iljo Benkovi}, the president of the Movie Theater Association “Lipa” from Ora{je. - Next year we will try to bring puppet theaters from Hungary, Austria and Serbia to Ora{je, with the help of Matrix Croatica for Emigrants. That way Ora{je would become an international center for children and puppet theaters – added Benkovi}. Another special feature about Ora{je’s theater festival is free access to each show and on their way out the children get a chocolate bar each. The festival is also unique considering the mass interest of children coming to the shows. Every year it is the same in Ora{je– full halls of those who come to watch a show. The organizer emphasizes that around 7.000 youngest ones from Posavina have visited this year’s «Puppet spring». www.bihcityreview.com 25 / 2008

Za uspje{nije izbjegavanje sezonskih alergena (peludi) stru~njaci preporu~uju izbjegavanje boravka i fizi~ke aktivnosti u podru~ju bujne vegetacije u vrijeme visoke koncentracije peludi u zraku, posebno u jutarnjim satima. Va`no je izbjegavati i dodir s ku}nim ljubimcima s dlakom i perjem.

cockroach excrements and insect poison, but also very frequently food, including milk. That is how even a bee sting can cause an allergic reaction. Thin-skinned people should pay a mandatory visit to the doctor and undergo therapy, because several stings in the neck or spots where vital organs are located can seriously endanger one’s health. Allergens can be found in crèmes, lotions and even in medicaments for local use. People sensitive to latex (main ingredient in rubber products) should also be careful with cosmetic products such as hair coloring products. The ones allergic to insect poison should be careful while spending time in the nature and have a self-help kit nearby, just in case. For a more successful avoidance of season-related allergens (pollen), experts recommend avoiding spending time or doing activities in leafy vegetation in the period of high pollen concentration in the air, especially in the morning hours. Drying and airing of clothing and sheets is recommended for the afternoon hours or on air-conditioners. For those sensitive to allergens throughout the year, reduction of dust in the house is recommended by removing fabric-covered furniture, decorative cushions carpets, curtains, etc. The space we live in has to be maintained on a regular basis – vacuumed and dusted, and the sleeping pillows shouldn’t be stuffed with feathers. Also, they shouldn’t be more than 5 years old. It is important to avoid contact with hairy or feathery pets. Pets would be best kept outside the house and bathed regularly to preserve their hygiene. People sensitive to contact allergens such as various metals should avoid objects and jewelry made of those metals. Contemporary science is investing huge efforts in the procurement of right medicines for allergies, and it is important to know that an allergy can only be controlled or healed after it has been definitely confirmed.

THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS OF TODAY’S WORLD he Vatican has published a list of the seven modern deadly sins, dubbed the “social sins” that apply to the whole society, rather than just individuals. Today’s sins are – according to the Vatican – genetic modification, experimenting on humans, polluting the environment,

causing social injustice and poverty, amassing “obscene” wealth, and the use of drugs. The Bible sins, like jealousy or adorning silver- are considered “individual sins”. DINOSAURUS NA PRODAJU ZA POLA MILIONA EURA ukcijska ku}a “Christie’s’’ }e prodati vi{e od 65 miliona godina star kostur pravog dinosaurusa, vrste triceratops.

The major reason against allowing human insemination with the help of this technique is the fact that it would represent the “ultimate incest”, because egg cells and spermatozoids could be created from the embryonic cells of the donors (as experiments with mice showed), meaning that one person could effectively become the child’s mother and father. Another consequence is that men could become completely superfluous in the process of human reproduction, transmits Observer. Christopher Anton Rea or Chris Rea performed within the European part of the tour “The Return of the Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes” that started in February and will end in April. Over the last few years Chris Rea left the noisy London and moved to Cockham, a small town 50 kilometers away, where he refurbished a 700-year-old mill into his personal studio, office and comfortable apartment. This lifestyle does good to him, more than ever after the two years of fighting his disease and the very severe pancreas surgery he underwent a couple of months back, which he barely survived. REA BACK IN SHAPE He came to Zagreb in a private jet almost two days earlier. The reason was the day off he had after his concert in Bulgaria so he wanted to get some rest. He entered the “Pleso” Airport through the ordinary entrance not wanting to use the privileges of the VIP entrance. His concert in Zagreb can be categorized as for the entire family. In a little bit more than an hour and forty minutes, Chris Rea first played as a member of The Delmonts, and the remaining hour and ten minutes were dedicated to the numerous hits from his rich career. The Delmonts are actually a band that performs instrumental music from the end of the 50s and beginwww.bihcityreview.com 25 / 2008

dowsa. Na sceni se transformiraju u The Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes. Ova je transformacija na bini izvedena uz pomo} mo}nih svjetlosnih snopova, te izmjenom loga “The Delmonts” u “The Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes” na pozadini bine. U sklopu aktualne turneje “The Return Of The Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes” Chris Rea promovira istoimenu muzi~ku knjigu.

ning of the 60s, similar to the Shadows. On stage they transform into The Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes. This transformation on stage was made possible by powerful spotlights and the continuing changes of the “The Delmonts” logo to “The Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes” in the back of the stage. Along with the “The Return of the Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes” tour, Chris Rea is promoting a music book of the same title. The story in the book is about an instrumental band from the 50s of last century, The Delmonts that turned into the blues band The Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes in the 60s. The box contains a book of 80 pages, three CDs and a vinyl record. ROCK FOR GROWING OLD WITH PLEASURE During the concert Chris Rea moved from instrumental rock from the beginning of the 60s to blues and finally to his own greatest hits with new arrangements. But most of all there was much of his known laid-back rock for growing old with joy. “This tour is different because I now have a new band composed of great musicians that make me feel that I’m approaching my goal. In the musical sense, of course”, Chris Rea said before his arrival to Zagreb. The 5th pavilion of the Zagreb International Fair blasted with classics like “Josefine”, in a reggae rhythm this time, “Easy Rider”, “Julia”, “Looking for the Summer”, for the concert to then reach its finale with “Stainsby Girls” and an extended version of “The Road To Hell”. After the latter, Chris Rea made a three-minute break and without waiting for the audience to scream for more, he and his band came back on stage and performed “On the Beach” and “Let’s Dance”. The white lights that followed let the audience know that there wasn’t going to be another encore. A DIFFERENT GUITAR FOR EACH SONG It was strange but the well-trained Zagreb audience didn’t complain much about only an hour and a half of performance for the price of 240 kn. The audience was mostly middle-aged people, generally women that followed the concert without exaggerated emotional spillovers. There was no room for disappointment though, because Rea lost no time on unnecessary guitar tunings or song announcements. He changed guitars before each song, handed over by a technician from his right. He spoke shortly to the audience, on two occasions. He said “hello” at the beginning of his performance, and asked them to sing to the chorus of “On the Beach” when the concert was reaching its end. As the reaction of the present wasn’t too fulfilling, he just said: “You are rubbish”, and continued uncaringly. Chris Rea made a come-back after surviving a difficult surgery a few years ago, but he rarely talks to the media. He only gave two interviews during the current European tour. In the one given to Media Servis he talked about his ex-Yugoslavian roots. He is Italian by father and Irish by mother. He has both Italian and Slavic roots because his Italian ancestors were Slavic gypsies that took care of the land of rich Italian upper classes. They are the ones from whom Chris inherited his sensibility and romantic touch. He knows Croatia mostly through football and says they are good in it. Here are several details from his biography. Rea was born on March 4, 1951. He has sold 30 million records dur-

Kako ga se mlaka reakcija nazo~nih nije previ{e dojmila, odmahuju}i rukom je zaklju~io: “You are rubbish”, i hladno nastavo. On je jedan od najrespektabilnijih pjeva~a i gitarista u Velikoj Britaniji, autor hitova „On Te Beach“, „Road To Hell“, „Blue Caffe“, „Josephine“ i mnogih drugih. Chris Rea ne krije svoju privr`enost opusima Vana Morrisona, Elvisa Costella, Bruce Springsteena, Joe Walsha , Rya Coodera i naro~ito oca laid-backa J.J.Calea.

ing his career. He is one of the most respectable singers and guitar players in Great Britain, the author of the hits „On The Beach“, „Road To Hell“, „Blue Café“, „Josephine“ and many others. It is interesting that Chris Rea performed before Queen on the wellknown tour “Magic” from 1987 and 1988. Rea is also an actor and he played a part in a movie from 1999 called “Parting Shots” and acted side by side with John Cleese and Bob Hoskins. MAJORITY OF SONGS DEDICATED TO HIS WIFE Ironically, he played a man with only six weeks left to live, who decides to get rid of all people that had done him any harm. Chris Rea is not a typical showman. He cannot stand the rules of showbusiness, meaning that he cannot be seen on places to which regular stars come. Yet, his cultural status is growing. He uses his stable family situation as a source of energy and inspiration for his songs, and most of them are dedicated to his wife Joana, with whom he has two daughters – Josephine and Julia, which were also inspiration for the songs that carry their names. There is a famous quote by him: “You try hard to record an ordinary song for the radio to help the sale of the album, but once the song becomes popular everybody forgets about the album.” He once admitted that a great role in his love for music was played by Mark Knopfler and The Dire Straits. Chris Rea and the Dire Straits started their career in 1978 but, while the Straits became one of the most popular groups with their first album, Rea’s fame had to wait until the end of the 80s and beginning of the 90s. He started his music career quite late, and the fame and popularity came even later. In 1976 he was proclaimed one of the greatest hopes of English rock by the journalists of the “Melody Maker”. His music is a European view of rhythm and blues. Chris Rea does not hide his respect for the work of Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Joe Walsh, Rya Cooder, and particularly for the father of laid-back rock, J.J.Cale. He also recognizes that he frequently has a problem with old blues guitars that cannot handle modern production or the many lights on stage, so they make funny sounds. To make a long story short, it was a pleasure to grow older during that hour and a half with the music of an artist that got to Zagreb thanks to the concert agency “Nota”. www.bihcityreview.com 25 / 2008

Bellissima danas nudi svoje kreacije u 16 maloprodajnih objekata {irom BiH.

And so, Bellissima models can today be found in 16 retail stores all over BiH. Another corroboration of its success is the recent opening of the exclusive boutique BELLISSIMA DESIGNER’S LINE at Sarajevo’s business center UNITIC. The new boutique, in addition to offering exclusive and unique evening models by Bellissima, also offers creations by renowned BiH designers Amna Kunovac-Zeki}, Jasna Had`imehmedovi}-Bekri}, Emina Hused`inovi}, and Ata Omerba{i}. Furthermore, we have nothing but the very best compliments for the fashion show we attended in the name of the opening of the new boutique. We could see mostly evening gowns, and dresses of all lengths, prints, and colors. Judging from the designs by these successful BiH designers, this season’s trend for the female population when it comes to evening clothing is silk in green, blue, pink, beige, and black and white colors. Of course, all the models that were presented at the show can be found in the new Bellissima boutique. We highly recommend our readers to go and visit either the new one or some other Bellissima boutique, and find something for themselves or their dearest, both for casual and evening occasions.
